The smallest dachshund breed – the rabbit dachshund

Kaninchendackel

The rabbit dachshund , also called a rabbit dachshund, is the smallest of the three dachshund variations. The miniature dachshund is the medium-sized variant and the standard dachshund is the largest. Its name comes from the time when it was bred specifically for hunting rabbits , which required a small dog that could easily get into the burrow. We have summarized the special characteristics for you in this article.

How heavy do rabbit dachshunds get?

The rabbit dachshund is relatively light, weighing 3-4 kg , and is one of the smallest dog breeds in Germany. However, its size says nothing about its character, as they also have the dachshund's hunting instinct.

How long do rabbit dachshunds get?

Rabbit dachshunds have a maximum length of 30cm. The shoulder height is about 11-15cm and the chest circumference is between 25 and 32cm.

What does a rabbit dachshund look like?

Characteristic features are the short legs, the long back and the floppy ears. The body is rather muscular and the chest is another distinctive feature. Further differences can be found in the different coat variations:

  • Short-haired rabbit dachshund: The short-haired rabbit dachshund has a very shiny, smooth and short coat, as the name suggests.

The only difference between the rabbit dachshund and other types of dachshund is its size. The head and eyes sometimes appear larger. This is why the typical dachshund look is particularly evident in this type of dachshund.

What colors can a rabbit dachshund have?

There are also some differences in coat colors. The following variations exist and are permitted:

  • Solid colored rabbit dachshunds: brown, red, cream

What is the life expectancy of a rabbit dachshund?

The life expectancy of a rabbit dachshund is up to 15 years. This makes the dachshund one of the dog breeds that has a longer average life expectancy. Some typical diseases can affect the life of the dachshund. These are:

  • Dachshund paralysis: If the dog is subjected to incorrect strain over a long period of time, the short legs and long back can lead to what is known as Dachshund paralysis.
  • Dachshund blindness: In some breeds, especially the wire-haired dachshund, blindness can occur.
  • Obesity: Obesity should be avoided at all costs so that the dachshund's short legs do not have to bear the additional weight.

To ensure that your rabbit dachshund reaches this old age, you should follow these tips:

  1. Make sure your dog gets enough exercise and fitness by taking long walks and exercising in a park or dog park.
  2. Make sure your dachshund has a healthy and balanced diet and does not become overweight.
  3. Avoid letting your dachshund climb stairs and jump off furniture or objects. Tip: Build a small ramp to his favorite places so he can easily get everywhere.
  4. Take your dachshund to the vet regularly and have him checked out.
  5. Make sure your dachshund has a comfortable and quiet place to sleep so he can enjoy a restful sleep. Restful sleep promotes health!
  6. Take care of your little four-legged friend's fur carefully and gently to prevent dirt and bacteria from settling in. Use a gentle care product.
  7. Last but not least, give him loving affection and a nice home where he feels comfortable.

To protect the joints of your little four-legged friend, opt for orthopedic dog beds . These are gentle on the joints and promote the health of your dachshund.

Does a rabbit dachshund need a lot of exercise and movement?

The size of the rabbit dachshund should not be underestimated, as it says nothing about him. You might think that he doesn't need much exercise, but the opposite is the case. Due to their hunting instinct, they have a strong need for movement and love to explore their surroundings. They have a lot of energy and are always attentive and alert . If the rabbit dachshund doesn't get enough attention due to insufficient exercise, it can lead to behavioral problems such as excessive chewing or barking. Always remember that sufficient exercise is not only important for humans, but also for their loyal companions.

Is the rabbit dachshund suitable as a family dog?

The rabbit dachshund is suitable for families who like to spend time with their dog. It is playful, needs exercise and is also affectionate. Everyone should decide for themselves whether the family can meet the requirements of the dachshund.

Is the rabbit dachshund a dog for beginners?

There are some dog breeds that require less attention. The dachshund needs consistent and clear training so that it doesn't walk all over its owner. Once the owner has won the dachshund's heart, it won't leave its side.

The miniature dachshund is a fascinating and versatile breed of dog that, despite its small size, has a lot of energy, courage and intelligence. In our blog post about the miniature dachshund, you can find out more about the second smallest dachshund variety.
